How do we make a difference in difficult times by taking on the role of local community leader?

Huge amounts of data show that our communities will soon have to adapt to an aging population. People are living longer and the average life expectancy today is about 78 years. It is estimated that by 2050 the population aged 65 and over will be almost twice as many as now. Naturally this population has and will have an ever more important role in society and in local communities.

In difficult times, as these certainly are, when the whole of Europe is struggling with the aftermaths of COVID-19 pandemic and the reality of a war next door, the activities of communities and the energy of their leaders can be a huge help in dealing with the situation.

There are many ideas for activities at this time:

  • Forming support groups for the most vulnerable in the local community: the elderly, orphans, members of disadvantaged groups;
  • Organizing groups of volunteers to help refugees;
  • Creating initiatives to help people to remain resilient and not to feel alone and s.o.

Similar, better and more practical ideas can be created and initiated for implementation by people 55+ years of age, who are willing to make a difference. If only these people would believe in themselves and take the initiative. It is these people that the Local Community Leaders project supports with the How to Be a Local Community Leader Handbook and the Training Modules and Kit. The handbook and training offer aspiring community leaders aged 55+ (but not only) practical steps to organise and implement their ideas and become an impactful community leader.

Here is a short glimpse into the 6 steps to become a local community leader, as described in the LCL Handbook and Training:

  1. Understand what community leadership and its purpose are. Understand the role of community leadership for the community development.
  2. Learn about leadership. Learn from example. Learn about the characteristics of good leadership.
  3. Understand what role the social characteristics of the community members have in a model of local leadership that works. Understand your followers.
  4. Find a cause that you are passionate for, set a goal and make a plan.
  5. Set your criteria for success and figure out how you will monitor the impact.
  6. Find a mentor and start a mentoring relationship, supporting you to become a community leader.
